My Number One Rule to Shopping…

3 07 2008

Okay, how many times have you caught yourself ruffling through a sales rack or a sales catalog saying “Oh my gosh, it’s on sale! I gotta have it!” Then after you purchased it in five different colors, you just stuffed it in your closet “just in case” you ever need it? I plead guilty. But that was way before I discovered my number one rule to shopping. Before I spill the beans, let’s just delve in deeper to why you need this rule for things to work. And by things I mean saving, picking the right clothes, and being more satisfied with your shopping experience.

Impulse Buying and the 80/20 Theory

When you shop and see something that’s just “too cool to not have” or something you think you would great in, you are impulse buying. Do not impulse buy. Take a minute to think about it or even try it on. More than half of the time, you’ll find out that it looked better on the mannequin than it actually does on you (and I’m not trying to be mean, it’s happened to me before). Or sometimes, it’s just not your color….honestly when are you ever gonna wear that lime green super ruffled, super short, sequined couture dress with a sky high collar? Some outfits are just for the run way. Or for Cher. Anyway, when it comes to shopping and saving, the key is to fill your closet with just the things you KNOW you will wear. Like 80/20 shoes creator Ce Ce Chin discovered, people almost always wear 20% of their clothes 80% of the time. So why not put that closet space to use with the stuff you actually like to wear?

Resist from Super Trendy

Another reason to use my number one shopping rule is to save money. Ah yes, the mighty dollar. It sure isn’t as mighty nowadays as it was before. At least not in the U.S. There are a number of ways to stretch your dollar and still go out stylin. One way is to not buy that super trendy top in the crazy multi color design that costs twice as much as the other tops in the store. Or even if it’s on sale for 75% off. Why?? Because many super trendy clothes only last a couple of months or less than a season. After that, God knows when it will ever come back. Sure the 80’s are back, but they always come back a little different and you have to know when to stop wearing it. So not purchasing a short lived trendy top is a worthy sacrifice. Think about what you can be spending it on…gas, paying your bills, a great dinner with friends, a much needed hair cut, a much needed pedi, restocking your fridge, etc. My point here is to spend wisely. Why waste money on something that will just sit there in your closet when you can save or use it on something you can find satisfaction or enjoyment in.

Okay, so what is the damn rule already? Simple….if you don’t LOVE it….don’t buy it!! Simple as that. Well why not just say “if you don’t NEED it, don’t buy it”? Rephrasing it that way is a no no because when we ask ourselves if we need something, we tend to make up excuses like, “sure I need it…not now, but later.” And the good ol’ “just in case” excuse. So if we ask ourselves if we LOVE it, we always honestly know if we LOVE something or not. This has saved me ALOT of money and ALOT of closet space. You obviously can’t use this rule with food, haha.

To Rephrase…

Now another way to rephrase the rule is this: That cute bag (or top or whatever) is $__.__. But is it $__.__ cute?? Sounds silly, but this is what I mean: You go shopping and see a really great bag. Well take a look through the bag. Hmm, no outside pockets…I like the clip opening though. Look inside. Hmm, cheap lining, one zipper pocket. But the outside is cute. Now look at the price tag. It’s $30.00. Now $30.00 may not seem alot to other people, but with $30.00 you can buy about 3 cute tops at Forever 21, 30 Jumbo Jacks, two or three great pairs of shoes at Payless, or put in for your gas. I’m sorry, but yes that bag is cute….but it ain’t $30.00 cute.

Some of that GoodWood…

26 04 2009

Now that I have your attention….

Good Wood in NYC is one of my favorite accessories stores online.  One visit to their online store and I was hooked. It features earrings, necklaces, and hand carved knuckle rings. Yezzir, I did say they have knuckle rings. It happens to be their stamp product. I just checked again and it looks like you can submit requests for a customized knuckle ring of your saying/design. These are all hand carved out of real wood by Kerri O’Connell (designer/founder) and her team. It’s so reasonably priced for something so unique, so original, so Hip Hop, and so fashionable. How can you possibly hate on these? Hey if you think you can rock them, then rock ‘em all the way. Here are couple of my faves…

Men’s Hairstyles

9 04 2009

Now I know I’ve been neglecting my men in the hairstyle department. This one is just for you. I’ve received some requests for what I think is hot in men’s hairstyles today. Well I made my choices below not simply based on trend, but based on the simple fact that they are great cuts. I always believed that if you KNOW you can rock it, then you can rock it all the way. But if you aren’t confident about your style, let alone your hairstyle…then honey, confidence is what you need to work on. Not your hair. Then again a new look has been known to boost confidence, but I digress.  Since I’m not a licensed hairstylist, I do not know the names of these hairstyles or cuts. I just know they’re hot.  Word.

Do Your Research

If you are looking for a specific cut, my best advice would be to research your barbershop and their barbers to make sure they cut the style you are looking for. Then bring in a picture of the cut for their reference. It doesn’t hurt to do your research. I seriously hate those style books they have in salons/barbershops. They only have cuts you’d see on the runway…not practical, not for everyday folks, and very hard to maintain.

Yes, Guys Need Hair Products

Fellas, don’t be fooled thinking real men don’t need hair products or tools. Because damnit, you do! A couple of things I would recommend for short hair; clippers & scissors for emergency trims and cuts, beard trimmer (Used to line yourself up; hairline and beard. Don’t know how? Look it up and learn. It’s useful.), a brush or comb to even out flattened sides. For long hair, you can never go wrong with some pomade or gel. Personally I would recommend some none greasy pomade. You get texture, hold, and movement without the flakiness and stiffness. Usually used to style short faux hawks and bed heads, aka “I just rolled out of bed” look.

Without further delay, here are my picks.

Johnny Cupcake Earrings

8 04 2009

Here’s something for my Johhny Cupcake ladies. Johnny just released some tastey new earrings soon to hit his retail locations and online store.  A friend gave me a heads up about this, so I looked into it and found it on the Freshness online magazine.

They come with 6 pairs of delicious colored earrings in the shape of the Johnny Cupcake crossbone logo. The best part is you can mix and match the 6 colors. Yummy

On that note, check out Johnny’s spring release @ http://www.johnnycupcakes.com

Kanye West x Nike: Air Yeezys

6 04 2009

If you haven’t heard by now, Nike just released their latest collab with artist Kanye West this past weekend. The Air Yeezy’s sell for a retail suggested price of $215.00. Yikes. But with it being so much in demand, retailers have even been charging more than the suggested retail price. You can bet that fans and shoe addicts have camped out for this one.

It’s well known that Nike has collaborated with athletes in creating quite a few of their models.  They have also collabed with music artists on custom versions as well. Now, I’m not a Nike collector but I’m pretty sure I have yet to see a recording artist come out with a collection of their very own model with Nike, until now. I could recall Eminem, but that was just twist on a already existing model. Anyway, so I can see how this is a big deal. On the other hand, and of course this is my personal opinion, I wouldn’t pay $215 for these. Especially now! Something about the plastic straps just interrupts the aesthetics of the design. And something about my pockets just doesn’t feel like payin that much for a shoe…any shoe. Face it though, recession or not, shoe addicts are probably payin up for them.

Transformer, Star Wars, and Pegasus in accessories

6 04 2009

Found some fun and interesting fashion related items today and couldn’t wait to share. Check these out!

Transformer fan? Can you believe these are Silver Plated Transformer Cufflinks? This creative designer had the Decepticon and Autobot image engraved in cufflinks…I checked out this particular design and unfortunately they are sold out for now. There is a silver and red one though,  it’s linked to this photo.

And check out these storm trooper cufflinks for you Star Wars fans.

And I absolutely love these Pegasus Earrings!

Nigo no longer BAPE owner?!

6 04 2009

According to the fashion world,  BAPE Clothing owner Nigo (Tomoaki Nagao), has apparently stepped down as president and director of the brand he founded.  Founded in 1993 and made popular by its exclusivity as well as by artists like Pharell, the future of BAPE is unclear. Nigo will however still have the role as head designer and co-owner. I guess he’s just way busy co-owning and designing other brands like Pharell’s Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream.  This is a developing story so I guess we will wait like everyone else. Stay tuned.

Zion-I’s the Takeover Tour

6 04 2009

A friend sent me these dates and thought I’d share it with any Zion-I fans. It’s the dates for their 2009 Takeover Tour. Zion-I’s music reminds me of college a while back. That’s how much music is a part of your life, when a single beat can bring a rush of memories back. My first encounter with Zion-I was when they performed at my college’s Multicultural Festival, and my group opened for them! I’ll never forget it, cuz I was amped as hell to meet them. If I could do it all over again…I would’ve worn a different outfit, haha. Anyway, here are the dates. The flier should take you to their site:

80’s Inspired Tank Tops

6 04 2009

As we all know, fashion in the 80’s has been a major hit in the past couple of seasons with brands and designers reinventing every last bit of it to modern trends.  I wanted to spotlight a particular one that Forever21 (yes ya’ll know how much I love to shop there) has recently been going with for their spring release. It is their 80’s inspired tank tops. The reason why I love these are especially for their nostalgic design characteristics; the faded prints, the neon combos, the fabric that seems to lay just right on your figure. Here are a couple I picked out for this spring and summer.  These would be great to pair with some nice skinny jeans or even leggings/tights because these are long enough to hang a lil past your waistline.  Each pic is linked to their pages on the site.

Kanye’s Business Upfront, Party in the Back

6 02 2009

I don’t know how I feel about this look. Actually, I do. I ain’t feelin it. There’s a reason why some things go out of style and never come back. But I guess Kanye decided to resurrect this piece of work up out the grave. I guess because it was Kanye I thought, “Hmm….okay.” And that’s mainly because I knew after his attempt to sing, he would try somethin else and just like his singing- some folks just accepted it. But if I ever see any of my friends tryin this mess on their head, I’ll be the first to offer them a free haircut. Any thoughts?
