Men’s Hairstyles

9 04 2009

Now I know I’ve been neglecting my men in the hairstyle department. This one is just for you. I’ve received some requests for what I think is hot in men’s hairstyles today. Well I made my choices below not simply based on trend, but based on the simple fact that they are great cuts. I always believed that if you KNOW you can rock it, then you can rock it all the way. But if you aren’t confident about your style, let alone your hairstyle…then honey, confidence is what you need to work on. Not your hair. Then again a new look has been known to boost confidence, but I digress.  Since I’m not a licensed hairstylist, I do not know the names of these hairstyles or cuts. I just know they’re hot.  Word.

Do Your Research

If you are looking for a specific cut, my best advice would be to research your barbershop and their barbers to make sure they cut the style you are looking for. Then bring in a picture of the cut for their reference. It doesn’t hurt to do your research. I seriously hate those style books they have in salons/barbershops. They only have cuts you’d see on the runway…not practical, not for everyday folks, and very hard to maintain.

Yes, Guys Need Hair Products

Fellas, don’t be fooled thinking real men don’t need hair products or tools. Because damnit, you do! A couple of things I would recommend for short hair; clippers & scissors for emergency trims and cuts, beard trimmer (Used to line yourself up; hairline and beard. Don’t know how? Look it up and learn. It’s useful.), a brush or comb to even out flattened sides. For long hair, you can never go wrong with some pomade or gel. Personally I would recommend some none greasy pomade. You get texture, hold, and movement without the flakiness and stiffness. Usually used to style short faux hawks and bed heads, aka “I just rolled out of bed” look.

Without further delay, here are my picks.

Chace Crawford from Gossip Girl. Not a fan. Just the hair. For longer cuts I wouldnt go too long. Just short and edgy. Photo from accesshollywood.com

Short Length Hairstyle
The Buzz
Anyone can get a shorter hairstyle to decrease their prep time in the morning, reduce the appearance of hair loss, and flatter their face. If you choose a short hairstyle that lets just a touch of wave show through, you’ll still have an easy time styling it. While a short haircut is easier, just remember that all haircuts should frame your face well, and your hairstylist will be able to determine the best shape of your low-maintenance ‘do.
A simple haircut is easy to maintain, but you will need to remember that all hair needs a little love. A drop of John Freida’s hair serum will add a little shine to your short haircut. Just don’t overdo it, or you’ll look like a greaseball!
Medium Length Hairstyle
Jude Law Natural
Jude Law is one celebrity who has a fantastic hairstyle that all self-respecting curly-haired men should appreciate. His curly hair isn’t over-processed, is well cared for, and can handle a touch of color without getting completely frazzled.
Jude’s secret? Well, besides the team of professionals working on his hair, he works with what he’s got without fighting it. His hair is well-groomed, and you can get that look with just a few styling tips.
To get Jude Law’s hairstyle, you’ll need to begin with the right cut. Your hair should be cut with tapered sides, in a length that just begins to show off your natural curl. When drying your hair, use your fingers to gently pull your hair forward towards your forehead, and then add a touch of gel mousse. Biosilk mousse is very creamy and has a medium hold perfect for unruly curls.
